These sayings probably sound very familiar to you and at one time or another they were probably true. But green or environmentally safe products have come a long way. Almost ever major cleaning manufacturer offers at least a basic line of green cleaning products. Due to an increasing demand for green products, manufacturers have been force to drive down their pricing. Also an increase in research and development has created a newer product that is more efficient and significantly lowers in-use costs.
Below are four of the most popular standard in the market today. But many manufacturers choose to self-certify their products, meaning that they do their own testing to proclaim that their products are green.
Green Standards
More than three dozen labelling programs now exist worldwide. This section does not mean to imply one standard is better or worse than another but just to give you an overview of what standards are out there.
Green Seal is a nonprofit organization devoted to environmental standard setting, product certification, and public education. Green Seal's mission is to work toward environmental sustainability by identifying and promoting environmentally responsible products, purchasing, and product. The intent of Green Seal's environmental requirements is to reduce - to the extend technologically and economically feasible - the environmental impacts associated iwth the manufacture, use and disposal of products.
Environmental Choice offers its EcoLogo to manufacturers and suppliers who make their products and services as green as possible, according to the organization's standards. Doing so helps consumers identify products and services that are less harmful to the environment. Currently, the Environmental Choice program covers a number of products in the cleaning industry, including janitorial paper products, cleaning chemicals, and bateria/enzyme-based products.
Greenguard Environmental Institute is a nonprofit, independent organization involved in standard setting is the Greenguard Environmental Institute. With a focus on improving indoor air quality, GEI sets acceptable standards for indoor products, buildings and environments to positively impact quality of life and public health.
EPA - Design for the Environment Formulator Partnership (DfE) is a voluntary partnership program from the EPA, the Design for the Environment program works to make products and processes healthier for humans and the environment. Unlike the other programs, the DfE program doesn't revolve around a specific standard, but rather works with individual manufacturers to improve their unique products.
